Since we’re passionate about animal rescue AND music, we’re posting a new playlist every Monday. You’ll see what we are listening to, and you can look forward to guest posts from some of our favorite friends, musicians, and fellow animal rescuers.
This week, Elizabeth is contributing her choices! Here’s her dumb face:
In no particular order:
Black Breath – “I Am Beyond”
It’s sooooooooo heavy! We saw these guys last year on tour with Goatwhore and Ringworm, and the show was incredible. I was completely blown away, and I can’t wait to see them again.
Goatwhore – “Apocalyptic Havoc”
Because I have always been a huge fan of Acid Bath, I think I probably liked Goatwhore before I ever heard them. We saw them on the aforementioned Black Breath/Ringworm tour, then again later that year at GwarBQ. They’re talented musicians who put on a fantastic show.
System of a Down – “Metro”
Hardcore Animal Rescue loves cover songs. This one takes me way back to high school. I was a big fan of System of a Down back in the day. I don’t really listen to them anymore, but this song is incredible. It’s a perfect cover, and if you’ve never heard it, do yourself a favor and click that link right now!
Accept – “Fast as a Shark”
As some of you may know, I tend to like my metal a little on the cheesy side. The reason this song is stuck in my head this week is silly – I bought a little shark brooch at a thrift shop not long ago, and I wore it out on Saturday. Now I can’t stop singing “Fast as a Shark.” The song is really great, though – it’s as fast as the title implies. If you’re into bands like Overkill, check out Accept!
Carcass – “Granulating Dark Satanic Mills”
Carcass is band that I’ve loved for a long time, so I was thrilled when they released Surgical Steel a few years ago. The entire album is incredible, but this song might be my favorite. I love a good mystery – Jeff Walker won’t reveal the significance of the numbers in the chorus, but I think this theory is probably correct (scroll to the bottom of the post).
Gruesome – “Dimensions of Horror”
If you are a fan of Death (and I certainly am), you’re almost guaranteed to love this band. I listened to this song several times a day last week.
Monolord – “Lord of Suffering”
I love doom metal. I listened to Monolord while I did some cooking and sewing this week, and they were great company.
Iron & Wine – “Sick of You”
I love cover songs. I love Gwar. I also love Iron & Wine (believe it or not). The Gwar version of this song is my ringtone for Chris, and hearing it makes me think of having a great time getting showered with blood at the GwarBQ. This slowed-down version is just as funny as the original, but perhaps a little more charming.
Meshuggah – “Bleed”
Meshuggah will be about two hours from here on tour this fall, and I’m DYING to go. It’s a school night, but I’m hoping we’ll make it anyway. I once heard someone say that “Meshuggah’s riffs weigh a ton,” and I think that’s a good way to put it.
Caninus – “Bite the Hand That Breeds You”
I heard this song again this week while listening to my favorite show of all time, “Bloody Roots.” What’s not to love about a pit bull-fronted grindcore band?! The song title alone makes my day.
